Does Zinc Help Sexual Vitality or ED? Sorting Out Zinc and Testosterone

Whether zinc improves erections or sexual vitality, and how research on zinc, testosterone, ED, and erections differs.

Key points

You may hear that zinc increases sexual vitality or that low zinc lowers testosterone, then start looking for a supplement to improve erections.

Zinc is an essential trace element, and its relationship with male hormones has been studied.

An association between zinc and testosterone is not the same as evidence that a zinc supplement improves ED.

Zinc deficiency and testosterone are associated

A 2023 systematic review combined 38 studies of zinc and serum testosterone.

It included human and animal research and found a pattern in which zinc deficiency was associated with lower testosterone and zinc replacement sometimes improved testosterone.

The effect of replacement depends on the original zinc and testosterone levels, amount, and duration.

Correcting deficiency is separate from taking a large amount when zinc intake is already adequate.

A study of 720 Japanese men did not find a zinc-erection association

A 2023 study from Japan examined serum zinc, testosterone, and erectile function in 720 men who sought care for sexual concerns.

Lower zinc was associated with lower testosterone.

After accounting for testosterone, cortisol, and other factors, however, there was no significant association between zinc and erectile-function questionnaire scores.

This is an important distinction.

“Zinc is related to testosterone” does not mean that “more zinc means firmer erections.”

Clinical trials do not yet establish that zinc treats ED

Studies have directly examined zinc and sexual function, but some involved special populations or were old and small.

A double-blind trial in men receiving hemodialysis for chronic kidney failure did not find clear improvement in sexual function or nocturnal erections after zinc.

Those results cannot be applied directly to healthy men.

At the same time, strong clinical data from large trials giving zinc alone to healthy men or typical ED patients and confirming improved erectile function are lacking.

Being in a “testosterone booster” does not guarantee an effect

A 2020 systematic review examined ingredients in commercial testosterone and ED supplements.

Zinc was common, but many ingredients in men’s supplements had contradictory, negative, or insufficient evidence.

A product called “men’s power,” “testosterone,” or “sexual vitality” has not necessarily been tested as a complete product in a randomized controlled trial.

With multi-ingredient products, it can also be difficult to know how much zinc you are actually taking.

If deficiency is possible, evaluate nutrition rather than chase an ED supplement

Extremely restricted diets and conditions that affect absorption can create zinc deficiency.

In that situation, the basic approach is to assess overall nutritional status and replace a confirmed deficiency appropriately, not to search for a supplement that dramatically improves ED.

Long-term excessive zinc can create other problems, including copper deficiency.

When using several supplements, check for overlap with multivitamins and other products.

BananaUp records zinc intake

BananaUp’s supplement_zinc does not display a promise that taking zinc improves erections.

If you use a zinc supplement, it records the day in the Supplement Log.

Some supplement_multivitamin products also contain zinc, so check your total amount when using several products.

BananaUp does not set a product-specific recommended or treatment dose.

If difficulty getting an erection continues for several weeks or you are concerned about low testosterone, speak with a healthcare professional rather than relying on zinc alone.

The Male Condition Check helps organize sleep, physical activity, stress, and erection condition. In 14-day tracking, distinguish zinc-intake days from other Condition changes.
