Why Am I Not Waking with an Erection? Sleep, Causes, and When to Seek Care

What to know about nocturnal erections and REM sleep, day-to-day variation, the difference from ED, and when a change deserves medical advice.

Key points

When several mornings pass without an erection, you may worry that you used to wake with one more often.

Morning erections are not caused only by sexual desire. Erections can occur during sleep without conscious intent, and you notice one as a “morning erection” when it remains at the time you wake.

One morning without an erection is not the same as a long-term absence of erections during sleep.

Erections during sleep are studied as sleep-related erections or nocturnal penile tumescence.

Reviews describe them as physiological events strongly associated with REM sleep. A 2026 review also examined the fact that erections occur mainly during REM and the relationship between sleep fragmentation, disrupted REM sleep, and erectile function.

A morning erection is an erection during sleep that you happened to notice after waking. Whether you notice it depends on which stage of the night you wake from.

One morning without it cannot show that nocturnal erections did not occur or that you have developed ED.

Separate days with disrupted sleep

Short sleep, repeated waking, and an unusual bedtime do not provide the same sleep conditions as usual.

BananaUp records the previous night’s sleep as well as the morning condition.

Instead of counting only weak mornings, compare “morning after short sleep” with “morning after seven or more hours.” After several days, you can see whether sleep and morning condition move in the same direction.

The relationship between sleep and male condition is also covered in “How to Compare Morning Condition and Sleep in Your Records.”

Morning erections alone cannot identify the cause of ED

Tests that measure nocturnal erections have been used as one way to assess erectile function.

A 2019 review noted that nocturnal penile tumescence and rigidity results do not perfectly match erections during sex and can also be affected by sleep disorders, age, smoking, and psychological state.

It is therefore not valid to choose between “I saw a morning erection, so physical ED is impossible” and “I did not see one, so I immediately have severe vascular disease.”

ED evaluation uses several pieces of information: when symptoms began, what happens during sexual activity, morning and nighttime erections, medication, and medical conditions.

Keep stress, alcohol, and general condition on the same date

When reviewing mornings, do not decide that sleep is the only cause.

BananaUp records morning condition on a four-level scale such as none, weak, usual, and max, next to sleep, alcohol, and stress in the Daily Log.

The accumulated data can show whether a weak response occurred only after a large amount of alcohol, during a highly pressured week, or steadily regardless of lifestyle rhythm.

This is not a way to check every morning and increase anxiety. It separates daily variation from one impression and puts it beside lifestyle factors.

How long should it continue before you ask for help?

There is no universal number of mornings that defines an abnormality.

If morning erections are clearly less frequent than before and the change continues while erections are also difficult to get or maintain during sexual activity for several weeks, discuss it with a healthcare professional.

The NIDDK describes vascular, nerve, hormonal, diabetes-related, medication, stress, anxiety, and lifestyle factors as possible contributors to erection problems.

Seek care rather than relying on daily logs if a sudden change comes with pain, penile deformity, injury, bleeding, or difficulty urinating.

The Morning Condition Check helps organize recent morning condition with sleep, alcohol, and stress. In 14-day tracking, place morning condition and the previous night’s lifestyle on the same date.
