Does Alcohol Make It Hard to Get or Stay Hard? Alcohol, ED, and Losing an Erection

A careful look at research on alcohol intake and ED, including the difference between occasional overdrinking and alcohol use disorder.

Key points

Alcohol can make you feel more relaxed, yet make it harder to get fully hard when the moment arrives. Some people can get an erection but lose it partway through. Experiences like these often lead to the question: does alcohol cause ED?

The NIDDK lists heavy drinking as one lifestyle factor associated with ED. At the same time, observational studies of long-term alcohol intake have sometimes found less ED among people who drink small to moderate amounts.

The evidence cannot be reduced to either “alcohol is always bad” or “a little alcohol is good for erections.”

Separate one night of drinking from studies of long-term intake

“I drank a lot tonight and had trouble getting hard” is not the same question as “which people are more likely to have ED based on how much they usually drink?”

A 2018 dose-response meta-analysis found a non-linear relationship between alcohol intake and ED risk, with a lower apparent ED risk in the moderate-drinking group.

A 2021 meta-analysis also combined 46 studies involving 216,461 people and reported a J-shaped association between alcohol intake and ED.

Much of this evidence is observational. Differences in age, diet, exercise, socioeconomic background, smoking, cardiovascular disease, and other factors can influence the result alongside alcohol intake.

These findings do not support starting to drink in order to prevent ED.

Heavy drinking and alcohol use disorder are a different situation

Sexual-function problems are frequently reported with heavy drinking and alcohol use disorder.

A study published in 2024 found ED in 68.5% of 203 men with alcohol use disorder. Drinking severity was also associated with ED, and erectile function improved after one month of abstinence.

That study involved men receiving treatment for alcohol use disorder. The 68.5% figure cannot be applied directly to someone who occasionally drinks a small amount.

A 2026 review likewise described the evidence on light-to-moderate drinking and sexual function as complex, while heavy drinking and binge drinking were consistently associated with ED and reduced sexual function.

Feeling less anxious after drinking is not the same as easier erections

Alcohol can make anxiety and tension feel less noticeable.

That does not mean being intoxicated makes erections easier. Reduced psychological tension and the body’s vascular, nerve, and sensory responses are separate things.

As the amount increases, sleepiness, altered sensation, and impaired judgment can also appear. BananaUp does not recommend using alcohol at every sexual encounter as if it were a medication for tension.

Put last night’s drinking next to this morning’s condition

BananaUp’s Daily Log lets you record alcohol as none, small, usual, or large.

Instead of leaving yourself with the impression that “every day I drink is a bad day,” separate small, usual, and large amounts. Then place sleep duration, morning condition, EQ, and ease of maintaining an erection on the same date.

If sleep was also shorter after drinking, it is not possible to isolate alcohol and declare it the cause. Even so, 14 or 30 days of records can show whether the same combination keeps repeating for you.

The existing column “How to Record the Morning Condition After Drinking” focuses on a practical way to record the following morning.

Days without alcohol are useful records too

BananaUp’s rest-day status is not a treatment for ED.

Use the Daily Log to record a day without alcohol as a rest-from-alcohol day. You can later compare sleep and morning condition on alcohol-free days with days when you drank.

If it is difficult to reduce your drinking yourself, or if you develop anxiety, shaking, or other symptoms when you do not drink, do not rely on an abrupt self-directed plan alone. Speak with a healthcare professional.

If difficulty getting or maintaining an erection continues for several weeks, do not assume alcohol is the only cause. A medical evaluation can also consider blood vessels, metabolism, medication, and stress.

Use the Male Condition Check to organize lifestyle patterns such as drinking. With 14-day tracking, you can keep daily alcohol intake, bedtime, next-morning readiness, and ease of maintaining firmness together under the same date.
