Does Magnesium Help Sexual Vitality or ED? Research on Deficiency and Erectile Function
We review whether magnesium deficiency is associated with ED, whether supplementation improves erections, and the main safety considerations.
Key points
You may see claims that magnesium increases male function or that low magnesium makes ED more likely.
Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in many functions, including nerve signaling, muscle contraction, blood-pressure regulation, and glucose metabolism. Medical research is accumulating on a possible relationship between low magnesium status and ED.
There is not yet a strong randomized controlled trial confirming that a magnesium supplement improves ED.
One study found more ED with a stronger deficiency score
A 2025 analysis of U.S. NHANES data included 3,917 men.
Higher Magnesium Depletion Scores were associated with a higher prevalence of ED. After adjustment for age, BMI, diabetes, and hypertension, each one-point increase in the score was associated with 37% higher odds of ED.
Another NHANES analysis in 2026 also examined the relationship between magnesium-depletion scores and ED.
These results show that deficiency and ED may be seen together. They do not prove that magnesium deficiency directly caused ED.
Dietary intake has also been associated with ED
A 2022 NHANES analysis examined dietary magnesium, zinc, copper, selenium, and ED.
Men without ED tended to have higher intake of these minerals, and the association remained after adjustment for age, BMI, hypertension, diabetes, and other factors.
This was also an observational study.
People who eat more magnesium may also eat more vegetables, legumes, nuts, and whole grains, and may differ in their overall diet and lifestyle.
It does not show that adding magnesium alone will produce the same result.
Trials of magnesium as an ED treatment are lacking
L-arginine and some herbal ingredients have randomized controlled trials in men with ED.
For magnesium, there are not enough high-quality trials that supplement magnesium alone in men with ED and compare it with placebo.
The EAU ED guideline does not list magnesium as a recommended ED supplement.
It is therefore premature to use the limited association studies to promise that magnesium will improve ED.
Correcting a deficiency is a separate question
Magnesium is needed by the body, so a confirmed or likely deficiency may call for dietary changes or supplementation when appropriate.
The U.S. National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements lists 400 to 420 mg per day as the recommended intake for adult men. Food sources include legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and green leafy vegetables.
That number is not an ED-improvement dose. It is a general nutritional target for healthy people.
Correcting a dietary gap and taking a large amount to improve erections are separate decisions.
More supplement is not always better
The NIH sets a tolerable upper intake level of 350 mg per day for magnesium from supplements and medicines in adults, separately from magnesium naturally present in food.
High supplemental intake can cause diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain. Extreme excess can contribute to serious problems such as low blood pressure and abnormal heart rhythm.
People with reduced kidney function need particular caution because they may not excrete extra magnesium efficiently.
Magnesium can also affect absorption of some medicines, including certain antibiotics and osteoporosis medicines.
BananaUp records magnesium intake
BananaUp’s supplement_magnesium is not a Routine that recommends magnesium for ED.
If you already use it, record the day in the Supplement Log.
Other products, including multivitamins, may also contain magnesium. Check for duplicate ingredients when using several products.
If difficulty getting or maintaining an erection continues for several weeks, speak with a healthcare professional before increasing magnesium.
The Male Condition Check helps review food and lifestyle context. In 14-day tracking, keep mineral-supplement intake and daily Condition changes as separate records.
