Are Snoring, Sleep Apnea, and ED Connected? Research on Sleep and Erections
What recent research says about sleep apnea and ED, including when snoring, breathing pauses, and daytime sleepiness should lead to a consultation.
Key points
You may sleep for what feels like enough time but still be sleepy from the morning. A family member or partner may say that you snore loudly or stop breathing during sleep. Your erections may also feel different from before.
In that situation, sleep apnea is one possibility to consider alongside sleep duration.
With obstructive sleep apnea, the upper airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, causing breathing to stop or become shallow. Its relationship with ED has been studied for years, and new systematic reviews and meta-analyses were published in 2026.

A 2026 meta-analysis found lower erectile-function scores with more severe apnea
A systematic review and meta-analysis published in July 2026 examined the relationship between sleep-apnea severity and IIEF erectile-function scores.
Across seven studies and 594 people, a higher AHI, the number of apneas and hypopneas per hour, was moderately negatively correlated with the IIEF erectile-function score.
This does not prove that more severe sleep apnea causes ED. Most included studies were observational, and age and other factors can confound the association.
The authors also noted that the studies varied substantially and used different methods to assess erectile function, so the results need careful interpretation.
Interpret oxygen saturation findings cautiously
The same 2026 meta-analysis reported an association in which a higher minimum nighttime oxygen saturation was associated with a higher IIEF score.
A comment published in August 2026 reexamined the statistics. When a different confidence-interval calculation accounted for only three studies, the correlation between minimum oxygen saturation and erectile function was no longer statistically clear.
The association between AHI and erectile function remained after the recalculation.
This cannot be used as a line such as “ED begins when nighttime oxygen falls below a particular percentage.” There is evidence of an association between sleep apnea and erectile function, but one number cannot diagnose the situation.
Snoring alone does not diagnose sleep apnea
Loud snoring is one symptom of sleep apnea, but not everyone who snores has it.
The U.S. NHLBI lists breathing that stops and restarts during sleep, frequent loud snoring, and gasping for air as symptoms.
Other signs include strong daytime sleepiness or fatigue, dry mouth, and repeated nighttime awakenings. Reduced sexual function is also listed.
If a partner notices breathing pauses, or loud snoring is accompanied by daytime sleepiness, do not only add more sleep time. Discuss an evaluation with a healthcare professional.
Will CPAP improve ED too?
CPAP and other treatments are used for diagnosed sleep apnea.
Some studies in the 2026 meta-analysis reported improved erectile function after CPAP, but the size of improvement varied by the IIEF measure and study.
Sleep-apnea treatment should not be viewed only as a way to improve ED. CPAP is a treatment for diagnosed sleep apnea, and a healthcare professional determines whether it is needed and how it is set.
Do not use a device on your own for ED. Seek a sleep evaluation when symptoms suggest sleep apnea.
BananaUp keeps sleep duration and morning condition separate
BananaUp is not a diagnostic app for sleep apnea. It cannot determine a diagnosis from snoring recordings or the number of breathing pauses.
It can record sleep duration, morning condition, and daily Condition.
For example, repeated records of poor morning condition despite seven or more hours of sleep can show that sleep duration alone does not explain the pattern. The records still cannot diagnose sleep apnea.
For loud snoring, breathing pauses or gasping, or severe daytime sleepiness, do not stop at the Sleep & Recovery Check; speak with a healthcare professional. Sleep studies are used to diagnose sleep apnea.
In 14-day tracking, keep sleep duration and morning condition under the same dates and see whether the change continues.
