How to Control Ejaculation: Pacing, Start-Stop and Other Options
Want to last longer during sex? Learn what ejaculation control means, behavioral methods and limits, pelvic-floor considerations and medical choices.
Key points
When arousal rises quickly, it can feel as though there is no time left to change pace. Edging means noticing that rise and practising when to pause stimulation. The practical question is whether you could pause when you wanted, rather than how many minutes you lasted.
Clinical assessment also considers perceived control and distress alongside timing (EAU, 2026). A personal concern and a difference in a couple’s preferred pace can call for different conversations.
Edging (ejaculation control)

Pelvic Floor Basic

Left: relax while lying down. Right: gently squeeze and lift around the urethra and anus. Keep your hips down.
Jogging / brisk walking

Swing your arms naturally and lengthen your stride slightly.
Edging and the start-stop approach
Reduce or pause stimulation when ejaculation feels close, and resume only if comfortable after arousal settles. Do not add a tight squeeze during the pause. NHS guidance distinguishes stop-go from a technique involving compression (NHS, n.d.).
If you noticed the urge too late to pause, a useful next attempt is to notice an earlier change in sensation. You do not need to increase the number of near-limit repetitions or minutes of endurance. The Edging routine has no fixed duration or repetition quota.
Agree on a signal before pausing with a partner
A simple agreed phrase such as “let’s take a moment” can make changing pace easier than suddenly stopping without explanation. Wanting to delay ejaculation does not tell you what your partner currently finds comfortable. Both people should be able to ask for a pause.
Keep contraception and infection protection in place. If the interruption involved in putting on a condom affects firmness, see condom-related erection loss rather than treating that as a failure of the pause exercise.
This does not require continuous pelvic-floor squeezing
Do not turn the pause into a sustained hard contraction of the abdomen or pelvic floor. Contraction and full release belong to the separate pelvic-floor exercise guide, not an extra set to complete during Edging (ejaculation control).
Stop immediately for pain, and do not continue through numbness or prolonged uncomfortable friction. If pelvic tension or urinary discomfort remains, rest and seek medical advice. The overtraining article covers changes that should interrupt exercise.
When erection problems or medication need discussion
If fear of losing firmness makes you rush, erection difficulties also deserve attention. Explain when the change began, whether it is persistent and whether pain occurs, rather than asking only how to delay ejaculation.
Medical options can include topical anesthetics or prescribed medicines. Discuss the ingredient, interactions and transfer to a partner with a clinician or pharmacist before buying; approved products and uses differ by country.
Record the activity, not a pass mark
In BananaUp, mark Edging (ejaculation control) completed or skipped. It does not grade a time-to-ejaculation score. A note such as “paused earlier” or “rested because tired” can sit beside that day’s sleep and stress record.
For the wider concern, read first steps for premature ejaculation. For questions about one or three minutes, use the separate timing article.
