Can a Multivitamin Improve Sexual Vitality or ED? What the Research Says

We separate research on individual vitamins from evidence for multivitamin products when considering erections and male sexual function.

Key points

Products labeled “men’s multivitamin” or “vitality support” can make it feel as if filling several nutritional gaps will automatically help erections and sexual energy.

Multivitamins can be useful when they help fill a nutritional gap.

There is not strong clinical evidence for using a multivitamin itself as ED treatment. Research on one ingredient such as vitamin D or niacin must be kept separate from the effect of a product containing many ingredients.

“Multivitamin” products do not have one standard formula

The U.S. NIH Office of Dietary Supplements says there is no standard definition of a multivitamin-mineral product, and the nutrients and amounts vary widely by product.

Even two products called “men’s multivitamins” may contain different amounts of vitamin D, zinc, magnesium, and B vitamins.

Some also add herbs or amino acids.

A study of one ingredient cannot therefore be converted into the claim that every multivitamin has the same effect.

Reviews of vitamins also produce ingredient-specific answers

A 2021 systematic review combined 11 randomized controlled trials of vitamin supplementation and sexual function in men and women.

Among trials that included men, one study of niacin showed improved erectile function, while clear effects were not confirmed for vitamins A, C, or E.

Results for vitamin D were also inconsistent.

It is not possible to conclude broadly that supplementing “vitamins in general” will unconditionally improve sexual function.

Do not apply a niacin trial to an ordinary multivitamin

A 2011 randomized controlled trial gave niacin or placebo to 160 men with ED and dyslipidemia.

Some erectile-function measures improved in men with moderate to severe ED.

The trial used up to 1,500 mg of niacin per day.

That is different from the amount in a typical store-bought multivitamin, and the study involved men with ED and dyslipidemia.

It does not support taking a large amount of niacin on your own or expecting an ordinary multivitamin to produce the same ED result.

A large vitamin D trial did not confirm improvement in ED

Observational studies have linked low vitamin D with ED.

The 2024 D-Health Trial, however, compared three years of vitamin D supplementation with placebo in 8,920 men.

ED was reported in 58.8% of the vitamin D group and 59.0% of the placebo group, with no difference.

Correcting a deficiency in one nutrient and adding that nutrient “for male function” while healthy are separate decisions.

A multivitamin does not automatically increase sexual activity

Older research gave couples trying to conceive a multivitamin or trace-element supplement and examined sexual frequency.

There was no difference in sexual frequency between the multivitamin and trace-element groups, and the study did not show that multivitamins increase sexual activity.

It did not directly evaluate ED.

Still, it does not support the simple claim that taking a group of vitamins increases sexual vitality.

It can help fill nutrition gaps

The NIH states that a multivitamin may help people who do not get enough nutrients from food reach recommended amounts.

It is not a replacement for a balanced diet.

For ED as well, a multivitamin cannot replace attention to the overall eating pattern, exercise, sleep, blood pressure, and glucose metabolism.

Combining several individual supplements with a multivitamin can also duplicate zinc, vitamin D, magnesium, and other ingredients.

BananaUp records multivitamin intake

BananaUp’s supplement_multivitamin does not promise more vitality or improved ED.

If you already use it, record the intake day in the Supplement Log.

Because products contain different ingredients, BananaUp does not judge the medical effect of a product just from the word “multivitamin.”

If difficulty getting or maintaining an erection continues for several weeks, speak with a healthcare professional rather than only adding another multivitamin.
